Class Description
Alternative castings are just plain fun to do and result in beautiful intriguing geometries that spark the imagination and challenge your creative mind to produce metal art. The methods shared in this class pour molten metals into organic materials, a great way to recycle metal. The result is instant gratification; it's like cloud viewing, but with metal (the metal object is what your creative imagination makes it).

In this class we will discuss safety procedures to ensure safe FUN. Students will explore a variety of alternative casting methods:
● Broom casting
● Water casting
● Tufa stone casting
● Rice, or bean casting
● Cuttlefish casting
Students will have the opportunity to cast their own creation in each method for later use as little sculptures or jewelry pieces.

Prerequisites
No metalsmithing experience necessary, ability to use a jeweler’s saw and carving tools and comfortable with a torch is helpful. Students should come to class wearing closed toed shoes and avoid wearing polyester, as it can be flammable.

About the Instructor
Chapin Dimond is a full-time professional metalsmith and jeweler. In 2003 he discovered the
magic of metalsmithing. From Metropolitan State College of Denver, he earned a BFA in Art:
Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing. Chapin is a Colorado native inspired by nature and the
magic of metals. Metalsmithing is the process of telling stories through metal, releasing the inner
“feeling” of what metal wants to be. Swing that hammer, light that torch, and see that magic
happen. To see Chapin’s work, visit his website, www.cdimond.com .
