Fold Forming with Travis Ogden
CLASS DESCRIPTION
Foldforming is a conceptual, physical and intuitive approach to metalsmithing that is informed by the natural characteristics of metals. Rather than forcing form upon a material, this system exploits the inherent qualities of plasticity, ductility and elasticity in metals, offering a significant new series of procedures that are extremely efficient for generating hundreds of unique, three-dimensional forms.
Students will learn how this process uses metal’s own characteristics, basically doing what the metal wants to do anyway – radical changes in cross sections and surface can be made in only a few minutes. The speed with which flat sheet metal can become a three-dimensional form can seem like magic. The tools used for this are familiar to most metalsmiths: hammers, mallets, anvils and rolling mills are excellent tools to use.
Students will learn four folding types including: Line folds, Multi-folds with added on texture, T Fold and Ruger Fold. Students will also learn the techniques for folding, forging and annealing metal and how to use metal forming tools and how to adapt them to folding techniques.

Two 3.5” hand seamers
Earplugs
sheet of 6” x 12” 24 ga copper

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Travis Ogden earned a BFA in Metal Art from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters in Metal from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. . He taught the University of Colorado Continuing Education Metals courses from 1982-1985. He also taught Metalsmithing and Casting courses at Front Range Community College in Denver.
Travis has been making one of a kind jewelry for over 27 years. In 2003 he won the Niche Award for a pair of Sterling Silver Hollow Anticlastic Candlesticks. Travis was a Niche Award Finalist 2007 and a Finalist for two different entries in two different categories in 2009.
Besides making jewelry, Travis loves to create bronze sculpture and other hollow anticlastic metal sculptures. Many of his pieces take several days or weeks to complete, due to the complexity of design and technical expertise he exhibits in his work. Visit his website at travisrogden.com
