Keum Boo Workshop with Pattie Parkhurst

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Add the beauty of gold to your silver jewelry pieces with minimal expense! Keum-boo is an ancient technique of bonding 24kt gold to fine silver without the addition of solder or flux. It adds beautiful contrast and increases the aesthetic of your work. The process of depletion gilding will be demonstrated to allow you to use the keum-boo technique on sterling silver pieces. See what a difference a little gold can make.
Participants should have experience using a torch and bring their patience to the workshop.
MATERIALS KIT* INCLUDES
Allcraft KB24 24kt gold foil
20 gauge sterling sheet
*Materials kit purchase is required for all our workshops. The kit insures all students have the same tools and materials required to learn the technique and allows the instructor and the students to focus on the technique rather than the materials.

leather work gloves
small fine scissors
additional 20g sheet silver (optional)
Finished fine silver or sterling jewelry pieces that may work for adding Keum-Boo (optional)
Optivisor or magnifiers (optional)
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Pattie believes the exploration of metalsmithing techniques is an endless adventure. The search for new means of expression can become an obsession driven by endless hours of practice. The obsession that fuels her work combines a technique called “anticlastic raising” with additional processes to enhance aesthetics and color.
She begin by hammering a flat metal sheet hundreds sometimes thousands of times over an antler-like form that she has fabricated from Delron plastic or steel rods. The rods are first heated, bent, sanded, and polished. Then she places the “antlers” in a vice and the hammering begins, over and over, shaping antler curves over and over to create the desired forms, from tiny earrings to 5 foot tall sculptures. For the larger contours she uses a wider curve and a larger hammer; for the more delicate figures she uses a small curve and a small hammer.
After hours of hammering the desired shape and appearance has emerged. Pattie finishes the pieces with stone settings or adds patina for color.
