Etching is an ancient technique to add design to metal, printmaking and more. In this class we will focus on etching metal using electricity. It's an exciting and quick process to etch copper, brass or nickel silver. You can also etch silver.
Two different methods of rendering a design on the metal will be taught: a traditional method using a resist and hand drawing your art directly onto the piece. The second method will be using black and white pre-printed designs and patterns and a magic transfer to the metal.
If you have experience etching with ferric chloride and are tired of waiting for hours for your etching to appear, electrolytic etching is oh-so-much-better. The process is less toxic, more precise and seriously faster - one hour or less.
Tools and Equipment
What you’ll want to bring:.
Materials kit* $25 (payable to instructor)
About the Instructor
Beth Van De Water says "Jewelry making was the result of a welding class gone astray (a backyard fire was involved). A smaller torch was sought to learn how to cut, glue, and form metal. The delicate nature of silver and gold along with the miniature masterpieces created in this art form over years drew me in and has entrapped me since. Adornment is one of the oldest know forms of art—even the Neanderthal where found with beaded necklaces. To make something that will be loved, worn and hopefully be passed along is a joy. "

Maximum 8 students. Students must be 18 or older and sign a waiver to participate in the class.
