Hollow Forms

Class Description
Add a new dimension to your work with hollow forms. Construct a 3-dimensional pendant or brooch from flat sheets of sterling or copper. Explore dapping block techniques and 3-D fabrication to build hollow forms of your own design. Learn the proper sequencing of steps, soldering tricks, and most efficient fabrication techniques, while also considering design, construction challenges, and wearability. There are endless possibilities for these hollow forms to incorporate in your own fabricated designs.
Make the most of this workshop by attending an optional design discussion with Carla evening of Friday, May 18. Create your design and start work on it the following day in class.
Prerequisites
Basic metalsmithing skills including sawing, filing, measuring, soldering, knowledge of basic metals studio safety procedures.
About the Instructor
Carla M. Fox brings the ideal balance of fine craftsmanship and wild imagination to her work. She has been a professional metalsmith/jeweler for over 20 years and her work has been featured and won awards in top juried art shows across the country. Carla loves to teach her craft, because she is the consummate student herself. Curious from childhood about tools and techniques and with an acute attention to detail, and a bit of engineering, she inspires that same joy and exploration in her students. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

- Scissors
- Jewelers saw & blades 3/0 and 2/0
- Needle files: triangle, ½ round, square
- Regular Hand files, ½ round and flat -coarse cut (be sure they have handles)
- *24g sterling sheet: size 3” x 3” or larger. (Don’t roll out thicker gauge to make this, it will warp metal)
- Dividers (Rio item #116224)
- 2” 18g and/or 16g round wire for bails for necklaces
- Solder: Hard, Med, Easy (I use wire solder, bring what you normally use.)
- Ring Clamp (Rio #113986)
- 2 Black Sharpie Markers - fine and ultra fine
- Scribe
- Safety glasses
- Wire cutters-semi flush
- Shaping pliers, good profiles would be: flatnose, chain nose, flat/round
- Small millimeter ruler
- Small drill bit (for drilling holes for saw blade)
- Optional:
- Digital calipers
- Texturing tools
- Textured flat sheet 22-24 g

- Strips of card stock for designing
- Index Cards for notes
- Floor/ soldering Nails - 12 each
- Sanding Boards + 120 grit sanding paper
- 2 – 1 ¼” sterling discs
- 2 – 1 ¼“ copper discs
- 2 22g x apx 4mm sterling strips 8” long
- Copper sheet 22g 3” x 4”
- Faux leather cord for necklaces
- 2 sets -Tie Tack Pin findings, for pins
- Snap on sanding discs + 1 mandrel (coarse & medium discs)
- Metal Square from Penn Tools $10 each, I’ll bring 3 to sell if anyone is interested.

- You may cancel up to 45 days prior to the start of the class and receive a full refund, less $25 processing.
- Cancellations less than 45 days prior to the start date will not be refunded,
- In the event we have to cancel a class, you will be notified prior to the start date and will be issued a full refund.
- Registration is not transferrable. You may not sell your seat to another student.
